Carnarvon

Okay so we thought Denham was windy, then we hit Carnarvon - 50k winds? Huh, we’ll see your 50k winds Denham and raise you to to 56k an hour!!!!!  As I write this we are still standing. Richie went to the local camping store and bought some more giant sand pegs and so far we are holding up.

Best attraction in Carnarvon

You can see the giant satelite dish as soon as you arrive
I had chosen the Coral Coast caravan park, as it had the best reviews on WikiCamps but it turned out to be a rather desolate camp with very few trees and very uneven ground - not much use for a tent. So we are staying at Wintersun instead. They went out of their way to find us as good a spot as possible but it’s still pretty windy. Oh well all part of the experience. The camp is quite nice, lots of lovely ghost gums and a nice pool.

My favourite camping activity, drinking coffee and spying on the other campers.

Carnarvon isn’t quite what I expected (bit of a theme here). It’s a bit unloved and looks like it’s been passed by. I had imagined all this lush green plantation - there is a bit of that but also lots of dust.

Not a local, as far as we know...

Saying all that we’re enjoying ourselves. We visited Bumbuks plantation today for the famous mango smoothie and it was pretty sensational. Also bought some nice jam for the Spangles. We’ve had a good drive around the town and local area and dilly lagged around the shops as we do. We have seen more Aboriginal people (just going about their daily lives) in Carnarvon than we have anywhere else we’ve been (except possibly Darwin). We also saw lots of school kids working in the shops after school, which was kind of cute.  Guessing they are family businesses and they are expected to help out.

Oh also seem to be more shoes worn here than on Kalbarri! BUT (there is always a but) the tooth fairy seems to be on steroids here, and is taking grown adult teeth at a rate of knots!

Dilly lagging around in Carnarvon
So on our last day in Carnarvon, which is day 5. (they trapped us with a pay 4 stay 5 deal ). We’ve seen pretty much all Carnarvon has to offer. The Space Museum was surprising good, and at $10 entry, well worth a visit. Was really interesting to see pics and video of Carnarvon in the 1960's and 70's. Bumbaks smoothies were delicious (in fact we’re going back this morning, post note: bloody place was closed), the fish and chips were pretty good (but not as good as our Palmyra chippy), the second hand shop was sufficient and the Carnarvon Pub had great views and icy cold beer and we spent time chatting with an old timer at Chinamans' Pool. We’re going back to the One Mile Cafe today, as they have live music and the views are lovely. The tent has withstood the super strong winds (with the help of some extra sand pegs).

On the waterfront, Carnarvon

Off to Coral Bay and 41 degree heat t'mrow. Will be interesting to see what it’s like in the tent, in the heat. post note: it was never that hot in Coral Bay, in fact it was really comfortable at night.
