The long, long road to Denham

On the road to nowhere Denham

Denham and Monkey Mia are on a peninsula and a 150k drive from the Great Northern Hway turn off. Amazing 150k of nothing but scrub. We were very happy to reach Denham, the white sand and windy foreshore are strangely welcoming.

We spent four enjoyable, if windy nights in Denham. First evening we went to the Shark Bay Hotel, for a few pre dinner drinkies.  It was a bit feral with a good range of mullets on view. Lots of interesting pictures of craggy local fisherman, including a bit of a shrine to one old geezer. On that note, there was also a very nice park dedicated to another local character. Was good to see the local people celebrated in this way.

Denhams' windy forshore

Denham, Shark Bay

We stayed at the Denham Seaside Caravan Park, for four nights, with an ensuite at the back corner. It was a nicely protected spot, just as well because the wind got up to 50 k’s one night! Our lovely tent was fine and we slept through it (well I did, I think Richie was checking the pegs a few times in the night).

The wind did its best, but we withstood..

Monkey Mia wasn’t quite what we expected (is anything ever ?). It is just the resort and caravan park, not a town. It was $15 to get into the park and that gave us the opportunity to see three separate dolphins feeding sessions and access to the beach and all the resort facilities, including two pools.

Was a very relaxing way to spend the day and we had the first swim of our trip (although we missed all the feeding sessions... oh well, once you've seen one dolphin......... )

Chiling at Monkey Mia resort

Didn’t do a lot else in Denham, had cakes and coffee in the bakery, visited all the local spots including the extremely blue little lagoon, bought a cocktail shaker at the local store and had dinner at the other bar, which was much more salubrious and no mullets. We also met a fellow from Bullcreek who thought he knew us, WA might be huge but it's also pretty small.

This is what holidays are all about......

Denham is a windy, chilled out little fishing town, mainly staffed by backpackers, but well worth a visit. Not sure that we would return, mainly because it adds an extra 300ks (return onto the journey).
